Undoubtedly, the biggest attraction in Balchik is the second largest botanical complex in Europe. Botanical Garden to the University of Sofia and cultural architectural complex "The Palace", designed and built in the early twentieth century. It was the residence of the Romanian Queen Maria. The garden was designed in 1926 by Swiss botanist Jean Joni. During the reign of the Queen the place was called "Garden of Allah". Today, the garden occupies an area of 65 acres. It has the unique collection of cactus obtained the second largest in Europe after Monaco, and other rare plants. In the botanical garden growing exotic trees such as rubber, paper tree, ancient Ginkgo, Metasequoia and evergreen magnolia. The plant species are more than 2,000.
