Despite the scary name Devil's Throat (Dyavolskoto gurlo) is one of the most impressive and curious caves in Bulgaria. It is located in the Western Rhodope mountains, about 1.8 km north of Trigrad and 17 km south of the city Devin. Its name comes from the head of the devil, that (now) is carved at the former entrance to the cave. Devil’s throat is an abyss and is one of the few who have no interesting formations. But here you will find a very different experience. The "neck" of the cave pours water on Trigradska river and forms the highest underground waterfall on the Balkan forms (42 meters).
The tourist route, passing through the passes, goes against the direction of the water flow. The road beginning in an artificially dug tunnel with a length of 150 meters, which leads up to Roaring Hall, which is the second largest hall in the caves in the country after the entrance hall in Devetashka cave. Its name comes from the roar of falling water. If you look around, you would remain breathless at the sight, the enormous size of the room and the sound of boiling water. Just before the entrance of the Roaring Hall is the clipped image of the head of the devil. Also, you will see two figures carved into the rocks - old figure of a man in full length and a small altar to the Virgin Mary is that provided just before the exit of the cave.
After Rumbling Hall, the 301 steps to climb, which rotate along the spectacular waterfall and take to the surface. The underground river flows into the siphon gallery with a length of over 150 meters. Then leaves the cave through an adjacent cave named "The ass of the devil". It is strange that nothing that comes with the water of the river in the Devil's Throat goes out. An interesting experiment with colors has shown that the water doesn’t travel a short distance instead, the flow goes for over an hour and a half under the Earth to the other hole. This is the reason for the mystery about the size of the underground river system.
Devil's Throat cave has many legends created by the time of the Thracians. One of the most popular is that Orpheus went through Devil's Throat to the underworld of Hades to rescue his beloved Eurydice. The best time to visit the cave is late spring and summer. There are interesting proposals and extreme experiences: Local Caving Club organizes dives with a boat on the underground river of May to October.
Now, when you go? :)
