Stone Window

The Stone Window  is another enchantingly beautiful natural formation. It is located in Golemiya Dol near the village of Kostino about 16 km from the town of Kardzhali. This unique phenomenon is a rock bridge, supported on both sides by two columns. In the past  the columns were three, but under the influence of weather and natural conditions, the third column has separated and today there is a large stone sponge on its place.

It is supposed that the formation of the phenomenon began about 50 million years ago (approximately when Stone Wedding  and Stone Mushrooms are formed, which are located nearby). At that time the area was seabed and it was the subject of constant volcanic activity. As a result of that and the continuous movement of the earth layers, parts of the crust rised above the sea level, starting the formation of unique shapes that were under the influence of weather conditions.

Today, the height of the bridge reaches 10 meters, the length is 15 meters, and the width - 7 meters. The three columns are the same height and are built of massive green volcanic tuffs and the roadbed is white. It is formed by a thin film of white limestone, which is resistant to erosion. The roadbed continues to protrude above the columns today.

How to get to the Stone Window:

By car - through the town of Kardzhali towards the village Enchets and Kardzhali lake; on the main road Haskovo – Kardzhali you must turn at the traffic police checkpoint and continue through the village Skalna glava. It is located in 700m from the asphalt road. The walking route starts from the hut Borovitsa.
